Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems
Postdoctoral Positions in Data Science
The Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems (NICO) and Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University is looking for exceptional candidates to fill two open postdoctoral positions in data science, broadly defined.
The research will be conducted with the research group directed by Prof. Dashun Wang, with unique opportunities for collaborations with other excellent faculty at NICO, Kellogg and across Northwestern. The group currently focuses on a number of fundamental projects at the boundary of computational social science and network science, including science of science, social dynamics, as well as fundamental questions in complex systems. Our priority is to attract technically strong researchers who are also interested in asking bold, new questions with data. A stated passion in data is a must; excellent organizational and interpersonal skills are essential; a proven experience with large-scale datasets and/or complex systems modeling is a strong plus. We welcome applicants with strong background in fields including statistical physics, applied mathematics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, social network analysis, complex systems, or other closely related fields.
How to apply: Candidates must submit to Dashun Wang (DashunWang@gmail.com) with subject heading “(your name) – Postdoc Application”, containing: 1) cover letter, describing your interest in and qualifications for this position; 2) curriculum vitae (including publications list); 3) two or three letters of recommendation emailed separately by the writers; 4) a link to the candidate’s professional webpage (if applicable).
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the positions are filled.
Post-Doctoral and Research Assistant Professor Positions in Complex Systems
The Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems (NICO) at Northwestern University seeks multiple post-doctoral researchers and Research Assistant Professors interested in problems of far-reaching, broad ranging research on complex systems. Northwestern University is located in a culturally and socially diverse Chicago suburb on the shores of Lake Michigan under the direction of NICO faculty who are leading experts in complex systems in their respective scientific disciplines.
NICO is a university-wide research institute dedicated to advancing complex systems and network science research through interdisciplinary collaboration. Visit the NICO webpage for more information on NICO’s local and internationally hosted events, weekly seminar series, reading group, distinguished speakers, faculty, faculty associates, dedicated offices, publications, and media hits.
Placement: NICO enjoys membership of faculty from the physical, social, and humanity sciences. Our post-docs, fellows, and research assistant professors have experienced a wide range of employment opportunities in academia, both scientific disciplines and professional schools of medicine and business, industry, start-ups, research institutes, and successfully founded their own firms.
Ideal Candidate: The position may involve theoretical modeling, computations, experiments, and writing proposals. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in physics, engineering, or information sciences with experience in areas such as statistical physics, time-series and nonlinear dynamics, simulations, or data science. Strong writing skills, demonstrated success in conducting high impact research, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills are mandatory. Two year and longer term multi-year appointments begin immediately.
Applications: To apply, please submit curriculum vitae along with a brief statement of how your research interests are related to the position you are applying to here. Salary and research budget are highly competitive and includes full medical insurance. Contact email@example.com if you have any questions.
Data Science Scholars Program - Closed
This program is now closed. Please continue to check this website for additional opportunities.
Data Science Scholars will join a university-wide initiative advancing Data Science throughout Northwestern. Scholars will have joint-appointments with the Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems and Data Science (NICO)—which coordinates the program—and another Research Center (see below) matching their area of expertise. Scholars will be appointed to two-year terms (potentially renewable for a third year). Scholars will receive a competitive stipend and benefits package, and an individual research budget. Starting date is flexible.
We are looking to recruit 4-6 Scholars who will be appointed across a number of research areas spanning the physical, chemical, biomedical, behavioral, social, economic, information, and communication sciences. The aim of the program is to offer a unique opportunity to expand the Scholars’ domain-focused research portfolio, and simultaneously establish their reputation as leaders in the exploding field of Data Science and Analytics. To this end, Scholars will be offered opportunities to establish their independence and to develop their leadership skills.
Applying: Outstanding candidates interested in this program should submit applications electronically to firstname.lastname@example.org. Applications from women and minority candidates are especially encouraged. Applications must include:
- a CV (including a list of publications with the most important 1 to 3 publications indicated with an asterisk),
- a three-page statement of research accomplishments and plans, and
- a list of 3 to 5 references.
Applications received by December 15th 2016 will receive full consideration. Later applications will be considered until all positions are filled. Applicants must complete their Ph.D. requirements prior to starting date of appointment.
